Introducing PlanetScale Managed Cloud

We announced our beta launch in May — the database for developers, designed for developer workflows, on top of the technology of the hyperscalers. Initially, we set out to launch on a shared tenancy model, having databases from different organizations running in separate processes while sharing compute resources.

After our launch, we saw high demand from organizations with regulatory requirements and compliance constraints and noted they can’t participate in a shared tenancy model.

Today, we are launching an alternative that allows you to use PlanetScale’s database workflow and management functionality from inside your own cloud network and accounts. PlanetScale Managed Cloud is now available for Amazon Web Services, with Google Cloud Platform support on the way.

In this configuration, you’ll continue to use the same API, CLI, and Web interface that PlanetScale offers. We’ve learned how to pack the best parts of PlanetScale into a to-go container and deliver them to your own account; bringing you the best of SaaS with the added benefit of an on premise deployment.

How does it work?#

PlanetScale Managed Cloud is a packaged data plane, built on Vitess and Kubernetes, that’s deployed to an AWS sub-account that you own and we operate. It is available in any AWS region you choose, even ones we don’t offer in the hosted product!

You and your team will interact with your databases through app.planetscale.com, as you normally would with our hosted product, all without needing to change any pscale tooling or Continuous Integration workflows.
